To perform, under the authority and supervision of the staff surgeon, administrative, diagnostics and therapeutic tasks to allow staff attending physician to extend his/her patient care and services.
Additionally, the physician assistant will act as the patient advocate in the medical care systems service as confidant, advisor, and liaison between patients and physicians.
Reports directly to the staff physician or designated resident for all patient-care-related functions. Charting privileges will be determined by the Procedure and Medical Records Committee as recommended by the staff physician. Practice encompasses evaluation and treatment of diseases of the head, neck and related structures. Deals directly with the medical staff members, nursing personnel and other departments to coordinate patient care requirements.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assists the surgeon in the pre-operative care and workup of patients to include:
Performs and records comprehensive history and physical examination, preoperative testing and education of patients regarding the risks and benefits of surgery.
Executes and relays medical regimens as directed by the supervising physician and/or as described in the work agreement between the physician assistant and the supervision physician.
Confirms operating schedule, availability of blood and summarize appropriate data prior to surgery.
Assists the supervising physician in clinic.
Provides ongoing comprehensive outpatient services under the direction of the supervising physician.
Participates in the postoperative care of patients, being especially knowledgeable in the recognition of postoperative complications, specifically: Informs the physician of all changes in the patients on going condition Collects ongoing data and writes pertinent notes on patients chart on daily basis Assesses the patients postoperative course and implement indicated therapy Summarizes details of patients hospitalization, including operative procedures and the follow-up of complications Makes routine rounds as directed by the surgeon
As indicated by his/her training and experience, performs therapeutic procedures as directed by the surgeon, including but not limited to the following: -Wound repair, care and dressings -Nasogastric intubation -Suturing of lacerations -Debriding wounds -Removal of sutures -Removal of surgical drains -Flexible laryngoscopy -Nasal endoscopy -Stroboscopy -Ear microscopy -Cerumen removal -Mastoid debridement -Nasal cautery -Simple biopsies of skin or mucosa membranes -Tracheostomy care and changing of trach tube -Endoscopic exam of trachea via trach tube or stoma -Laryngectomy stomal buttons -Post FESS endoscopy debridement
Assists the supervising physician with correspondence relevant to the patients care.
Attends appropriate in-house conferences and attend appropriate continuing medical education.
Examines preoperative and follow-up patients in the clinic prior to their being seen by the surgeons and complete admission formalities.
Participates in clinical research, review of patient records and selected projects.
Participates in departmental quality improvement studies in concert with supervising physician.
Must have a working knowledge of computer and electronic medical record. Perform all other duties assigned by the supervising physician.
