Description
The Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery is accepting applications for a funded Research Fellow position Ohio beginning July 1, 2023. This is a two-year fully funded position for qualified residents/trainees interested in a career in cardiology/cardiothoracic surgery.
The research fellow will be responsible for conducting clinical and translational research projects in conjunction with the members of the Division, including retrospective outcomes studies using institutional and national databases, small and large animal surgical studies, and translational research. The Division has 2 principal areas of research including:
Novel methods to improve access to and outcomes following pediatric heart and lung transplantation, and
Evaluating and treating thromboembolic and inflammatory sequelae of mechanical devices in cardiovascular surgery.
Research fellows in this division have traditionally achieved 5-10 oral presentations and 10-20 peer-reviewed publications per year.
REPRESENTATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES
Design, execute, and record laboratory experiments, and analyze the data.
Research and improve current methods and evaluate innovative techniques. Implement this knowledge in the Division/Department.
Present research at laboratory meetings, journal clubs, seminars, and meetings.
Draft, write, and edit scientific reports, papers, journal articles, abstracts, and grants.
Maintain currency in field through continuing education, literature, and seminars.
Attend required Cincinnati Children's training sessions and ensure regulatory compliance with all policies and procedures.
Perform other duties as assigned.

MD, Ph.D. in related discipline, or equivalent required.
Preferred
Applicants are ideally current surgical trainees in an ACGME-accredited program with 1-2 years of surgery training and some research background.
REQUIRED SKILLS: Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills. Demonstrate attention to detail, strong organizational skills, supervisory ability, and an innovative approach to experimental design. Computer literate and working knowledge of software applications (word processing, spreadsheet, and database). Analytical ability sufficient to compare data; mathematical ability sufficient to perform algebraic calculations and statistical analysis. Ability to synthesize information and to create and deal with new situations by applying past experiences. Expressed willingness to teach others and share results. Capable of meeting time demands necessary to execute experiments.
